I Love Jane Pratt and So Do You
Jane is back... and here's a video to remind you how cool she is.
Yes, yes, Sassy changed my life. As it changed yours. During the pandemic, you may have indulged in the Sassy Podcast and revisted your teen years. If you remember …(very funny, I know, of course you do) it came in a brown paper wrapper so our parents wouldn’t ask us what/why we were reading this “inappropriate” magazine that was made JUST for us.
As an only child with no sisters, I was never a girly girl, and this is how I learned about absolutely everything I needed to know to BE a “girl” without being terrified, and I devoured every article and every issue. Nothing is special about any of this, I’m certainly not alone…
It was sad when Sassy became no more, but Jane had follow-ups; Jane Magazine, then xoJane and then xoVain. I wrote for xoVain, thanks to Marci Robin, and had a blast doing so. (I’d link to the articles, but as you may already know, they have left cyber-space and are all unsearchable now). …and for you insomniacs reading this now, you may also want to google Jane’s talk show era.
Back to 2014- The magical call came in one day from Marci… “Jane needs makeup, are you available?”. I couldn’t hide my excitement when I faked like I had to check my calendar. I thought this would be my first and last time meeting Jane, but I continued to get her ready for important events during aquisition of her publications by TIME Inc. She is zero fuss of course and stretched out our time together as much as I could as I loved talking with her. Sorry, Jane! Her stories were fantastic of course and all my Gen X dreams were coming true in real time.
This was the same moment in time that I had begun working on Larger Than Life and I was interviewing people who knew Kevyn. Jane had shared with me an amazing story about Kevyn Aucoin in regards to Sassy Magazine. I asked if she would let me put this story on camera and she graciously said “when and where”?
The story is one of those that I was tragically faced with cutting, and in the end I had to leave it out of the film (I always say we had the most beautiful cutting room floor anyone has ever seen). I wanted to share it here because it’s a good one that gives me hope in humanity again… and it involves Janet Jackson.
Jane is no stranger to contraversy, nor is anyone who is trying to do big things. I for one have my eyes on what she is doing next, and invite you to do so as well.
What sparked this stack entry you ask? Well Jane has made her way here to The Stack! You can follow her here:
and also start getting into what she is up to next here:See you there…!
Wait you’re a MUA *and* you made a film about Kevyn Aucoin?!
